The Book Club book
Elizabeth Strout writes about small town, everyday life in Maine. This books stars characters from some of her other novels, but still works if you haven't read anything else by her. Bob Burgess, a local lawyer, is defending a lonely man accused of killing his mother. He has also become deeply attached to his friend, the writer, Lucy Barton, who lives nearby. Together, Lucy and Bob discuss their lives, their hopes and regrets, and what might have been.
At the same time, Lucy, has befriended Olive Kitteridge, now living in a retirement community on the edge of town. In Olive’s apartment, they tell each other stories of the people they have known – “unrecorded lives,” as Olive calls them. And by talking they manage to reanimate these lives, adding them with meaning.
