The Book Club book

In 1843, Ivar, the only inhabitant of a remote Scottish island, finds a man unconscious on the beach. The stranger is John Ferguson, a church minister sent to evict Ivar and instead use the island for sheep.  Unaware of his mission, Ivar looks after Ferguson and a fragile connection slowly forms between them, despite not speaking each other's language. Meanwhile, on the mainland, Mary, John's wife, awaits his news.

This is a powerful story, constructed with tension and tenderness: a touching study of ordinary people, caught up in their moment of history.

'An exquisite, hopeful masterpiece' Rachel Joyce
'A poignant, profound depiction of both solitude and connection. Carys Davies has written a masterful, discreetly sublime book' Hernan Diaz

Geoff says:

"This novella is a marvel of storytelling, exquisitely told, poignant, gripping and atmospheric.  It tells the story of the 'highland clearances' in which local people were forced off the land for the profit of rich landowners."
