The Book Club book

This is a spell-binding story of a romance set against the difficult background of postwar Germany. It is both a romance while on another level it is an examination of the complexities of dealing with the aftermath of World War II.

The novel follows the relationship of Michael Berg, a fifteen-year-old boy when they first meet, and Hanna, an older woman.  Their secret love affair casts a long shadow over his life.  For Hanna is not all she seems, and her past working for the Nazis, leads to profound and unsettling questions.

This short book, well written in clean, simple but descriptive prose, is very thought-provoking.  It explores the guilt felt by the younger generation for the crimes of their parents' generation, even though most ordinary Germans were powerless to prevent the atrocities.

Geoff says:

"This is a beautifully written book.  It is written in straightforward language but deals with complex issues while telling a gripping story.  Kate Winslet won an Oscar for her portrayal of Hanna in the 2008 film.”
