The Book Club book

'Richly sensuous... something special' The Sunday Times

Hamnet is the story of Shakespeare's family.  It's 1596 and Judith is unwell with a fever in Stratford-upon-Avon.  Hamnet, her twin brother, knows it's serious and looks for help. His mother, Agnes, is tending her medicinal herbs. Their father, William Shakespeare, is working in the theatre in London. The parents don't know that one of their twins will not survive.

Hamnet is the story of family, the powerful bond between twins, of a marriage under immense strain. But it also gives a powerful voice to Agnes (Anne) Hathaway, who William, a glovemaker's son, falls in love with against social convention. And it is an unforgettable imagining of a boy whose name lives on in "Hamlet" - one of the world's greatest plays.

 Geoff says:

"This book is an incredible work of fiction.  Little is known of Shakespeare's family life, but Maggie O'Farrell gives it to us in all it's beauty and heartbreak.  This book was the Winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction, and the Fiction Book of the Year at the British Book Awards."
