The Book Club book
The first line of this book references Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis: "That morning, Jim Sams, clever but by no means profound, woke from uneasy dreams to find himself transformed into a gigantic creature." However, unlike Kafka, our protagonist is a cockroach transformed into a human - and this human is the British Prime Minister!
We follow Jim in his mission to carry out the "will of the people", overcoming all the obstacles in his way. Ian McEwan is a masterful story teller, and this story has this trademark intelligence, insight and wit. If you wonder how Britain managed to end its successful 40 year old relationship with the European Union - this is a book you should read!
Geoff says:
"This book shares something with Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels - it's a biting political satire, written in elegant prose, and raising important questions about how we got to Brexit and beyond. Highly recommended to understand recent UK politics!"
