The Book Club book

Katherine Mansfield was associated with a brilliant group of modernist writers including T.S. Eliot, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf.  This collection of short stories is considered to be Katherine Mansfield's first mature work. Her stories often dwell on one moment, a turning point, rather than on a traditional plot, which is secondary to the atmosphere and characters.  The stories are innovative in featuring commonly found things and she often uses accessible images and symbols, frequently from nature.

After an introductory session on the author, each week we will read and discuss the following stories:

Week 1: The author's life and legacy
Week 2: Prelude
Week 3: Je ne Parle pas Français, Bliss
Week 4: The Wind Blows, Psychology, Pictures, The Man Without a Temperament, Mr Reginald Peacock's Day
Week 5 : Sun and Moon, Feuille d'Album, A Dill Pickle, The Little Governess, Revelations, The Escape

Geoff says:

"This writer has had a profound effect on both the style of the short story, and on the subject matter and theme.  101 years after her death we are reading her to discuss her literary importance, and to share in her unmistakable delight in being alive and putting life on the page.  She said: “The amount of minute and delicate joy I get out of watching people and things … is simply enormous, the detail of life, the life of life.”
