The Book Club book

Robert Harris, the master of innovative historical fiction, introduces us to the world of Roman politics with his portrayal of the rise of Marcus Cicero, a young Roman senator.  The world of intrigue and electoral corruption is both remarkably similar to our own, while also being very different.

The story of Cicero's rise is told through Tiro, Cicero's secretary and slave who invented shorthand and wrote numerous books, including a celebrated biography of the great orator, which was lost in the dark ages.  Imperium is therefore the re-creation of Tiro's missing masterpiece, telling the first part of the story of Cicero alongside Pompey, Caesar, Crassus, and the many other significant Romans.

 Geoff says:

"This is the first book of the "Cicero trilogy" - a gripping read, full of drama and suspense and a fascinating portrayal of life in Rome"
