HELPING YOU TO USE ENGLISH EVERY WEEK

You use your English each week by reading a part of your chosen book at home, and then later discussing it in your online English book club.

The course helps you create an English routine - weekly reading in English, writing a weekly summary, weekly discussion of what you have read. It provides extra motivation to really develop your English.

You speak in English with other people who love books - discovering different opinions, ideas and the background to the book. You enter, reflect on and discuss the world the author has created.

Case Study

"I recently took my first English Book Club course, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The course combined reading with conversation practice. Each week, we discussed a section of the chosen book, focusing not only on the story but also on vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and pronunciation.

Geoff did a fantastic job of guiding the conversations, offering interesting insights, and encouraging everyone to share their thoughts on various aspects of the book. He also took the time to correct mistakes (both written and spoken) and provided useful language tips. The group size was perfect, and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere made speaking easy.

I highly recommend this course to any booklover looking to improve their fluency and confidence in speaking English."

Why take an English book club course?

There are many reasons why people take these courses.

Confidence. A common reason is to improve confidence in your spoken English. Each online book club is a small group of friendly people who are all non native English speakers plus your British teacher. The environment is positive and inclusive - helpful for building belief in yourself when speaking in a foreign language.

Challenge. It is a tremendous achievement to read and discuss a foreign book in the original language. Book Club School helps many people to read their first book in English, and these participants have taken great pride in their achievements. Reading a classic book in English is another challenge that some people set themselves.

Language improvement. Reading in English is a great way to naturally improve your vocabulary and to process repeated patterns of words and phrases used correctly in context. It is magic learning as you acquire language naturally, just as you did as a child. By writing a weekly summary and having it corrected you can improve your written English and grammar. And in the online book club sessions errors in your spoken English are corrected.

Language maintenance. If you don't use your English it will slowly degrade. Some participants find that they don't have friends or colleagues to speak to in English anymore. They use this English book club course to maintain their English level and stop it slipping backwards.

Intellectual stimulation and fun. New participants are often surprised that the book club course is really fun. Booklovers are often delightful - interested in others, fascinated by stories, intellectually curious. Many of the participants have become friends with each other, as you often have a lot in common with others. This is a great way to spend an hour every week.

"It was an amazing experience! The teacher was excellent. I really noticed an improvement in the way I communicate. My co-workers told me that I had improved. The teacher always corrected our grammatical mistakes which helps us to improve."

It was the first time I participated in a Book Club School. I love reading in my native language, but I was worried to face reading in the English language. I needed a guide, and I found it! Good teacher, few people and exciting books are perfect ingredients to improve English skills. Highly recommended to books lovers!

Giovanna, Italy

I’ve been joining a course at the book club school for 5 weeks now and I can absolutely recommend it. For me, it is a perfect way to combine my passion for reading and my pursuit of improving my English conversation skills. We meet weekly via zoom and discuss a specified passage of the novel. Optionally you can write a summary of one chapter, which will be corrected by Geoff, who is a very experienced teacher and guides the lessons confidently and with a very pleasant sense of humour. The atmosphere is highly appreciative, and I think I will also miss the other members, once the course is finished. But it will definitely not be the last course at the book club school for me!

Anja, Germany

Great learning experience. Have found solid motivation to read regularly. Group members and Geoff are very friendly. Club atmosphere is warm and cozy. Looking forward to reading and talking through new books.

Dimitri, Russia

"I knew from the beginning that your method of teaching English was different and innovative but I didn't expect to become part of a wonderful community and to make new friends. Now, besides improving my English, the book club has become a weekly appointment I cannot miss."

Francesca, Italy

Such a wonderful experience: small groups, the best teacher and a great selection of books! If you want to improve your English reading novels and speaking, you will love these courses!

Guendalina, Italy

"The book club is really useful to improve your reading of classic and modern books. With Geoff's guidance I really was able to understand the different aspects that every story tells us. If you love books and you would like to share your ideas, this is definitely your place."

Luciana, Argentina

"I really enjoyed rediscovering The Great Gatsby, but also reading some unfamiliar American poetry and short stories and found the class meetings were always eye-opening. I would certainly recommend Book Club School and am looking forward to starting a new course. "

Martine, France

Reading is considered a solitary activity by many, but for me it was a surprisingly enjoyable experience to read on and discuss new chapters of the book with my course-mates week after week. Our teacher Geoff was great in leading our discussions and adding new aspects to the novel. A totally positive experience!
