The Book Club book

This book is known as "the greatest novel you've never read".  In the story nothing unusual happens, and yet also, everything happens.  It is the story of one unremarkable man's life, a man who thought he would be a farmer but who becomes a teacher.

William Stoner is a normal, quiet man.  He goes to the University of Missouri to study agriculture but while there his life is changed by a seminar on English literature. We follow his life, his relationships, understanding that after his death, his colleagues don't remember him very often.

Yet this convincing account of a human life, told with truth and compassion, details the everyday conflicts, defeats and victories unrecorded by history - and gives us a profound picture of the significance of a life.

Geoff says:

"This story of an ordinary man throws light for us on the everyday, showing the universal in the individual, the unrecorded lives among us all.  A classic!"
