The Book Club book
This book is difficult to define - it's a literary thriller, a love story and a search for a lost poem. Yet at its heart What We Can Know goes to the past, present and future and asks serious questions about identity and purpose.
It is 2119 and the low lying parts of the UK have been covered by rising seas of the environmental catastrophe. What has been lost haunts the survivors. Tom Metcalfe, a University academic studies the archives of the early twenty-first century, amazed by the freedoms and possibilities of human life at its peak. In his research he finds a clue to a beautiful, but lost poem. However as details emerge of love and a brutal crime, his assumptions are destroyed about a story he thought he knew so well.
'McEwan’s most richly layered work' Sunday Times
'A gripping page-turner' Observer
'A daring, beautiful novel, full of wisdom and heart' Elif Shafak
Geoff says:
"Ian McEwan is one of Britain's greatest living authors. He offers piercing insights and a rich narrative texture, writing with intelligence and charm. What We Can Know is a literary thriller set in a future world where all is not quite lost."
